Software-defined wide area networks (SD-WAN) have undoubtedly captured the attention of enterprises worldwide. They bring improved bandwidth, superior reliability, easier and faster deployment, better security, and greater visibility. Many early deployments by enterprises were a do-it-yourself (DIY) model, often with the assistance of SD-WAN vendors. As the SD-WAN market progressed, the need for assistance in deploying, operating, and managing these solutions offered an opportunity for CSPs to participate. It is part of this second wave of SD-WAN deployments where there's focus on providing multiple SD-WAN choices, and leveraging carrier-controlled infrastructure to reduce potential lock-in.
The research brief discusses the characteristics of the second wave of SD-WAN deployments and the key requirements. We examine how the right orchestration system can meet those requirements. Finally, we share observations and learnings from real-world deployments of multi-vendor multi-domain SD-WAN.
